AquaBot - Mecha

I'm Happy to share my new Robot Character Artwork. I wanted to create some artistic textures for this artwork so I began my process with a lot of futuristic and cyberpunk like neon references.
Working on this robot model also brought some unique challenges. One of the primary difficulties was achieving realistic metallic textures. I needed to strike the right balance between reflectivity and roughness, especially with areas that had rust or scratches. Getting the textures to look natural took time, as I had to fine-tune each material layer to interact correctly with light. This process required a lot of trial and error, and I found myself revisiting the materials frequently to make sure everything looked cohesive. Texturing became the heart of this project, as each texture told a part of the robot's "story."
Modelling is done in Maya, Fish is sculpted in Zbrush and all of the texturing part is done in Substance 3D Painter.
Lighting presented its own set of challenges. I wanted the robot to look dynamic and lifelike from multiple angles, so I had to set up lighting that worked well across different perspectives. Balancing between realistic shadows and highlights, while avoiding too many reflective hotspots, took a lot of experimentation. Adjusting the light intensity and angle also required fine-tuning to avoid washing out the textures or creating overly harsh contrasts. This process helped me develop a stronger sense of how lighting can enhance or detract from textures.
Thanks!
